Our class has focused on four units in math this quarter: algebra, geometry, operations with negative numbers, and proportions. Our study in algebra included writing and solving algebraic equations, coordinate graphing, and using the order of operations. The unit in geometry included vocabulary relating to lines, angles, and polygons. In addition, the class generated and used formulas for determining the area and perimeter of rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids. The class learned several methods for understanding and solving multiplication and subtraction procedures with negative numbers. Finally, the unit on proportions used word problems to formulate and solve equations involving rates, ratios and proportions.

November 3, 2009 by shaunasullivanThis month the class will focus on developing the concepts of area, congruence, and multiplication. The students will learn how formulas for the area of parallelograms, triangles and trapezoids are derived from the formula of a rectangle. They will focus on memorizing geometric terms as they learn to create and solve algebraic equations to find amounts of material needed to sew flags from around the world.

October 14, 2009 by shaunasullivanThis month we will concentrate on learning to write and solve Guess and Check tables. These will build a foundation for representing numerical relationships that will lead to writing equations. The students will learn to subtract negative numbers and multiplication of negative numbers. In addition, the class will focus on the order of operations.

First Week of Math
September 11, 2009 by shaunasullivan
Jahntu and Elazar compare answers.
Archway sixth grade math class started off the year at full speed. The students spent their first few days learning about working in pairs, correct procedure for completing work, explored integers, and even had time to do some extra credit!

Anya and Isabel work with integers.

Andrew and Joshua start extra credit.

September 9, 2008 by shaunasullivanThis month we will be reviewing multiplication and division and practicing working with integers. In addition we will learn the three Ms of data interpretation: median, mode and mean.
Our second chapter, the Game Show (GS), will cover absolute value, adding and multiplying integers, solving equations, and graphing in the coordinate plane.
