This month the students will examine ratios and equivalent fractions to build an understanding of the reasoning behind formal operations with fractions. They begin with solving problems using ratio tables and linking these to equivalent fractions. The class will make and use fractions strips and a giant ruler to compare mixed numbers, improper fractions, and equivalent fractions. The students will also explore and use the Identity Property of Multiplication to find equivalent fractions. This will lay the groundwork for writing and solving problems involving proportions.

This month the class will focus on developing the concepts of area, congruence, and multiplication. The students will learn how formulas for the area of parallelograms, triangles and trapezoids are derived from the formula of a rectangle. They will focus on memorizing geometric terms as they learn to create and solve algebraic equations to find amounts of material needed to sew flags from around the world.

Jahntu and Elazar compare answers.
Archway sixth grade math class started off the year at full speed. The students spent their first few days learning about working in pairs, correct procedure for completing work, explored integers, and even had time to do some extra credit!

Anya and Isabel work with integers.
